Embark on an unforgettable journey from Fez to the mesmerizing Sahara Desert and the vibrant city of Marrakech. Begin your 4-day adventure in Fez, traversing the famously vast Sahara Desert venturing through the mesmerizing Dades Valley and enchanting Todra Gorge. You’ll have the opportunity to relish the stunning landscapes of Skoura, known as the Valley of Kasbahs, and visit the iconic Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate. Finally, you’ll cross the majestic High Atlas Mountains, culminating your tour with a drop-off in the city of Marrakech.
This tour is a delightful segment of our comprehensive Best of Morocco Tour, and it serves as the reverse route of our Marrakech to Fez itinerary. It also pairs well with some of our itineraries covering the famous Imperial cities of Rabat, Meknes, Fez, and Marrakech.
After a delightful breakfast, we embark on a journey towards Ifrane, a picturesque mountain village often referred to as the “Switzerland of Morocco.” From there, we continue our expedition to Midelt and finally reach the mesmerizing Merzouga.
Throughout this scenic drive, you’ll be treated to glimpses of the Middle and Higher Atlas Mountains, offering breathtaking vistas. A stop at Azrou, a charming Berber village nestled within the renowned cedar forest, the largest in Morocco, allows one to admire the forest’s beauty. As we venture closer to Errachidia, the landscape transforms, revealing hints of the desert.
Indulge in a delightful lunch, savoring the warm Berber hospitality. Our journey continues along the lush Ziz Valley, occasionally pausing to admire panoramic views before reaching Erfoud and Rissani. By the afternoon, we arrive in Merzouga, where you’ll spend the night in a hotel.
After a hearty breakfast, an exciting 4×4 tour awaits. We’ll visit fascinating desert caves, home to natural desert fossils. Following the road used by the Paris Dakar rally, we traverse the desert, with its striking black volcanic rocks, and have the opportunity to meet a Tuareg family in the Khamlia village. This village is renowned for its African population and vibrant music, including an annual music and dance festival held in the first week of August.
Returning to the hotel, the day’s highlight awaits as you embark on a camel ride, meandering through the dunes to reach a desert camp. Here, you’ll experience an enchanting evening filled with Berber music, sandboarding, and an overnight stay under the starlit desert sky.
Wake up early to witness the beautiful sunrise and capture some memorable photos. After a short camel ride back to the hotel, we continue our journey, passing through Rissani and heading towards Tinjdad for a delightful lunch.
En route to Skoura, you can explore either the Todra Gorge or the Dades Valley; both offer views of awe-inspiring natural wonders. Tonight, you’ll stay in the serene Skoura palm grove, famously known as the Valley of Kasbahs. However, you can opt to spend the night in the Dades Valley or the enchanting city of Ouarzazate.
Leaving Skoura behind, we visit Ouarzazate, where you can explore the historic Taorirt Kasbah, once owned by the Glaoui family. Our journey continues to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou, a magnificent fortified village showcasing ancient Moroccan architecture.
We then traverse the Tizi n Tichka pass, crossing the majestic High Atlas Mountains as we approach our final destination, Marrakech. Along the way, be treated to breathtaking landscapes and picturesque vistas.
